Over the weekend, hockey commentator and advocate Don Cherry made headlines after calling out Toronto Maple Leafs President and General Manager Brian Burke for having no roster players from the Leafs’ home province of Ontario. He went on further, citing other teams’ recent playoff successes with Ontario-born players and the fact that the Leafs will likely miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
On a roll, and not content with stopping there, Cherry spoke out again today, this time focusing his attack on Tampa Bay Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman and Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon for their teams’ lack of Florida-born roster players. The flamboyant, profane, and often controversial Cherry had this to say:
“Just look at Tampa. They’ve been toiling around the bottom of the Conference all season. Why? Not one damn Floridian on their roster.
“And the Panthers? Yeah, they’re a nice story this year, but they can’t close the door on Winnipeg or the Capitals. Not one Floridian on their roster either. I’m just speaking my mother fucking God damn mind here. Some people may not like it.
“I mean, seriously, what the God damn fuck? There’s two, maybe three players from Florida in the ECHL. Who the shit are they supposed to look up to? They need some God damn NHLers from their home state to pave the fucking way.
“And really, when you look at those two shitbag teams historically, they’ve always been a couple of wagons full of dick. It all comes down to not having any damn homegrown players.
“Who was the dumb schmuck that gave Florida two shitting hockey teams anyway? What a fuckshit.
“Again, people may not like what I’m saying, but ya know what? I say what I feel. COME AT ME, BRO.”
While Yzerman declined to comment on the tirade, Tallon seemed generally amused by the rant, playfully offering this in response:
“A wagon full of dick? I can’t even be mad. What does that even mean? What type of wagon? A horse and buggy? A radio flyer? A Buick Roadmaster with the wood paneling?”
